Background:

Use ISCRAM Modeling Framework to assess supply chain security risks.

Supply chain security risks arise when suppliers, whether compromised or malicious, are able to cause the degradation or subversion of security properties of the components they supply or maintain. When these components are singular and isolated, the risk posed by a supplier is assessed by evaluating the particular component. On the other hand, when these components are interspersed through a system and hold positions of significant importance, then the risk posed by their supplier may be much greater and more complex to evaluate.

The ISCRAM modeling framework aims to provide a quantitative risk assessment of suppliers in such situations, building on related work in security and reliability engineering. By modeling the system's components, suppliers, and security dependencies, various measures of relative importance can be calculated. When combined with actual or estimated probabilities, these importance can be further refined.


Project Scope

1) Identify a system or subsystem of the Client with sufficiently available data and appropriate size to conduct a case study. The aim of the study will be to better understand system risks that arise due to suppliers and offer suggested priorities for mitigating these risks.

2) Utilize available data to analyze supply chain security risks using the ISCRAM modeling framework. The primary product of this analysis will be a ranking of analyzed suppliers by the potential risk they may pose. This ranking can be used for further analysis or mitigation efforts. Depending on available data, this ranking can be refined to incorporate estimated risks inherent in various components and their suppliers. Absent such data, the ranking reflects the relative importance of suppliers given the location in the system of components that they provide.

3) Explore needed adaptations to existing models to support Client priorities related to supply chain risk assessments. In addition to applying models as already developed, adaptations may present themselves as greater exposure to priorities and available data is gained.
